Alexandria Museum Of Art celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month is in full swing, and the Alexandria Museum of Art is kicking off its month-long series of events starting January 6.

At 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, the museum will be hosting a workshop held by poet Sha’condria “iCon” Sibley.

The workshop will introduce participants to how to get started writing poetry.

Tickets for the workshop costs $5.

Following the workshop, Sibley will be performing spoken word poetry at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for that are $10.

The museum said students are eligible for a discount.

Sibley is a native of Alexandria who grew up in the Sonia Quarters. When she lived here, she used to do monthly rhythm and rhyme spoken word nights at the museum.

Sibley is now based out of New Orleans.

The museum said they received a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, which they used to bring Sibley back to perform in her hometown.

“We’re excited to have her back to share some of what she’s learned with us,” said Olivia Helmer, Curator at AMOA. “If you haven’t heard her perform before, you should definitely come check it out. Cause she’s just really indescribable. I think she has a really great presence and just a way with words as poets do.”

This event is the first of many events to come this month as the museum celebrates Black history.
