Nigerian Afrobeats star, Wizkid, on Saturday, June 12 marked the 10th anniversary of his debut album, ‘Superstar’.
Released on the 12th of June 2011 by Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), owned by Banky W, the album reportedly sold over five million copies between 2011 and 2012. It was also adjudged the most anticipated album in the same year.
However, a decade after its release, Wizkid has released a docuseries titled ‘A Superstar Made in Lagos’ on his Youtube page.
He features in the interview series alongside industry giants like his mentor Banky W, ace comedian Ali Baba, British-Nigerian Boxer Anthony Joshua, Afrobeat veterans Femi and Yeni Kuti as well as Terri, an upcoming artiste signed to his Starboy music label.
Speaking in the series, Wizkid reflects on his childhood, recalling his early days in Surulere.
The singer, who grew up in Surulere part of Lagos mainland, speaks on being the last child of his parents in what he describes as a ‘spiritual home’. He narrates how he followed his Muslim dad to the mosque and his Christian mum to the church.
Wizkid started his career under the tutelage of Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment.
“Getting signed to Banky was one of the amazing things that happened to me. It was just an amazing moment for me. It changed my life,” the multiple award-winning singer says.
He expresses appreciation for Banky W and the EME team for their impact on his life and career.
