Nigeria has dropped one place to 90th on the latest Henley Passport Index, even as its passport continues to provide holders access to 44 destinations without obtaining a traditional visa before travel.

The July 2026 edition of the global ranking, released on Tuesday by Henley & Partners, assessed 199 passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without securing a visa in advance.

According to the report, Nigeria retained its visa-free access score of 44 destinations, but the unchanged figure was not enough to maintain its previous 89th position in the April 2026 ranking.

Henley & Partners said the index, published to mark its 20th anniversary, is compiled using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and evaluates access to 227 destinations worldwide.

Nigeria now shares the 90th position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan, with each country’s passport granting access to 44 destinations through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival or electronic visa arrangements.

Despite the slight drop in ranking, Nigerian passport holders can still travel to dozens of countries across Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific without going through the conventional visa application process.
