Indian short film, ‘Kaala’, which won the Best Narrative Short Drama award at Cinequest Film and VR Festival in the United States has qualified to be considered for nomination at the forthcoming Academy Awards.
Shot in New Delhi, ‘Kaala’ was inspired by racially motivated attacks on African nationals in India and tells the story of an African student in New Delhi, who becomes a victim of hate crime.
“Considering its timely content, we are trying to the best of our abilities to promote the message of diversity and equality and also at the same time raising the existence of racism in our society,” Filmmaker, Tarun Jain said.
Jain crowd-funded to complete the post-production of ‘Kaala’ when the production was short on budget. He described the response from people across the world as “overwhelming”.
The film stars Jude boman Tony, Kaatyaayani Pandey, Rahul Tewari, Chiranjit Das, Prashant Sharma and Aman.
The 93rd edition of the Academy Awards is scheduled to hold on April 25, 2021.
