A commemorative stone is to be laid in London in honour of the late Mobo founder Kanya King, to mark the 30th anniversary of the music ceremony.

The Mobo awards music ceremony – which celebrates black music, culture and excellence from the UK and abroad – was launched by King in 1996.

Through Mobo, King is credited with playing a major role in bringing black music and culture to the mainstream in the UK. King died this summer from colon cancer at the age of 57.

The Paving the Way stone will be unveiled on 18 November at her former school, Queens Park Community School in Queen’s Park, north-west London.

King was awarded a CBE in 2018 for her contributions to music and culture.

A BBC programme to mark the 30th anniversary, presented by DJ Target, will take viewers through some of the most defining moments, performances, and cultural milestones from the Mobo stage since it was first founded.

The programme, MOBO 30: Iconic Moments, will air on 11 November on BBC One and iPlayer.

The anniversary celebrations will also see V&A East Storehouse present a special temporary display featuring a selection of memorabilia from the Mobo archive.
