The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) has released the list of nominees for the 17th edition of the awards scheme, one of Africa’s biggest and most prestigious platforms that celebrate African cinema.
The AMAA 2021 nominations announcement was held at the Ebony Life Place, Victoria Island, Lagos on Friday evening.
Announcing the nominees for the 26 categories, President of the AMAA Jury and former Lagos State Commissiiber for Tourism Arts & Culture, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the AMAAs received more than 400 entries from different countries across the continent and the African Diaspora, noting that this year’s nominees list reflects the brilliance of African filmmakers.
‘The Gravedigger’s Wife’, a Somali film, received the most nominations (10), including nominations in categories like award for best film in an African Language, award for best actor in a leading role and best director.
Tanzanian movie, ‘Nyara/The Kidnaping’; Nigeria’s ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’, ‘Eyimofe’, ‘Ayinla’; Collissiin Course and South Africa’s ‘African American’ also snagged multiple nominations.
Nigerian actress and Big Brother Naija star, Oluwabamike Olawunmi-Adenibuyan (Bam-Bam) was nominated in “Best Young/Promising Actor” for her role in the movie ‘Collision Course’, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters.
Star actresses, Rita Doninic and Funke Akindele were also nominated in the Best Actress In Leading Role category, for their efforts in ‘La Femme Anjola’ and ‘Omo Gheto: The Saga’ respectively.
Regarded as the biggest gathering of filmmakers and other creatives in Africa, AMAA 2021 Gala and award ceremony is scheduled to hold on Sunday November 28, 2021 at the Marriot Hotel, Ikeja-Lagos and will be televised live in more than 40 countries across Africa and other countries worldwide.
