A community-based literacy program that uses barbershops as unconventional learning settings for youth partnered with a Baton Rouge public school to give students free hair cuts, and, in return, the students had to read a book aloud to their barbers.

LINE4LINE provides free haircuts to boys ages 3-13 on the first Monday of every month, and on Monday, the program partnered with IDEA Public Schools to give boys free haircuts while promoting literacy.

LINE4LINE’s vision is to strengthen the community from within by allowing grade-level and above literacy through a program of role modeling and mentoring. The nonprofit aims to foster social and academic success.

The IDEA Public Schools network serves nearly 53,000 college-bound students in 96 schools across Texas and Louisiana, and the tuition-free charter schools have sent 100% of graduates to college, according to Communications Manager Jennifer Flores.
