Popular comic actor and producer, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has expressed outrage at the leak of his 2019 film, ‘Merrymen 2: Another Mission’.
The Moses Inwang-directed blockbuster, which starred actors like Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Ireti Doyle, and Falz, made a Netflix comeback on Friday June 5 after a successful outing at the cinemas in December 2019.
The comedian took to his Twitter handle to condemn the pirating of his movie through a link circulating on the internet.
Reacting to the hack, he said: “It would have been okay to hack or access Merry Men 2 as a criminal that you are, but sharing the link on social media and asking everyone to go download it outside the licenced Netflix platform is criminal. Do note that as you bring down the hustle of another man, yours will never grow.”
Meanwhile, mixed reactions have followed the comedian’s outburst. While some persons have criticised the act, some others have welcomed it.
Replying to AY’s tweet, a social media user wrote: “Bro chill if you dey some people shoes you go still join run am conviniently.”
@ykeezyofficial wrote: “I think it will be ok if you guys started suing those bloggers uploading your work on some free blogs for free download. That’s how they learn their lessons. Nothing is going to change until some drastic action is taken.”
Another user, @izic_s commented: “Chai..this one pain bros @AYCOMEDIAN. Piracy didn’t start today and AY won’t say he has never seen a pirated movie. Anyway that hacker should still be dealt with but we won’t forget the wonderful work he did.”
“It’s important you understand the efforts and money spent to make a good movie as MERRYMEN 2. Oga try to be considerate. Maybe if you had been an investor you’ll understand,” @thisislanrey commented.
A sequel, Merry Men 2, continues the story of the Merry Men (Ayo, Naz, Amaju and Remi) as they meet their match in some ladies bent on making them pay for their deeds.
Since its release, the movie has grossed a cumulative ₦41.6 million, making over ₦36 million in its first weekend across 54 cinemas.
