Nigerian afro-pop singer, Tiwa Savage, has received an honorary Doctorate Degree from her alma mater, the University of Kent in the United Kingdom.

Ms. Savage was presented with her honorary degree on Friday, July 15, 2022.

The Afrobeats star, who is also a Kent alumna, was made a Doctor of Music in recognition of her inspirational and international career in music.

The University took to its Twitter Handle to share a photo of the hip hip sensation as she received the certificate at Canterbury Cathedral on Friday.

The photo was captioned, “Congratulations Dr @TiwaSavage! We’re super proud to have awarded the Queen of Afrobeats an honorary doctorate at Canterbury Cathedral this morning.”

In her message to the school class of 2022, the singer said “I’m super proud and I want you to go out there, have fun and kill it. Be the best that you can be because you truly deserve it.”

The singer had completed a degree in Business Administration at the University of Kent before she won a scholarship to study Music at Berklee College of Music in the US – the same college where the legendary American singer, Lionel Richie, was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in 2017.

In a related development, the University for the Creative Arts, last week, awarded supermodel Naomi Campbell with an honorary doctorate degree that recognized her decades-spanning impact on the fashion world. She accepted the honour onstage during a graduation ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall, where she gave an emotional speech to the graduates.

In a touching post shared on Instagram, Campbell reflected on the honour.

“Graduation Day , I’m beyond words of gratitude and emotion to receive such an honour from @unicreativearts,” she captioned a slideshow of photos from her special day. “Thank you for the warm embrace class of 20, 21, 22. You are our future creatives and cannot wait to see your contribution to the world. Thank you President and Vice-Chancellor Bashir Makhoul.”

Tiwa joins the likes of 2Baba, Alexx Ekubo, Mo Abudu, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Emeka Okonkwo (E-money), Ayo Makun (AY), Peter Okoye, Mike Ezuruonye and a host of other Nigerian celebrities who have been conferred with an honorary doctorate degree.
