Renowned Disc Jockey, DJ Obi has paid tribute to British-Nigerian rapper Skepta for his pivotal role in promoting Afrobeats globally.

On a recent podcast, DJ Obi highlighted the significance of Skepta’s collaboration with Wizkid and Drake on the Ojuelegba remix in 2015, which marked a major breakthrough for Afrobeats worldwide.

DJ Obi believes Skepta deserves more recognition for his contribution to the genre’s international success.

He emphasised that Skepta, as a respected figure in the UK music scene, used his platform to champion Wizkid and Afrobeats, bridging the gap to global markets.

According to him, the collaboration not only showcased the music but also represented cultural exchange and access.

While acknowledging the hard work of Nigerian artists, DJ Obi stressed that influencers like Skepta played a crucial role in amplifying Afrobeats and deserve appreciation for their efforts.

“Skepta did a lot for Afrobeats. I don’t think we give him his flowers and respect. When there was need for help to cross over, certain people stood up. And Skepta was one of those people”, he said.
