Mixed Feelings As Burna Boy Reportedly Demands ₦100m, Private Jet For Homecoming Concert

Mixed reactions have trailed a tweet on social media which claims that Grammy award-winner, Burna Boy, is asking for a sum of ₦100m and a private jet to convey his team to perform at a concert in his state of origin, Rivers State.

“Burna boy charging the Rivers state government a 100m appearance fee plus a private jet for his upcoming homecoming concert in port-Harcourt is very valid,” the tweet by @PH_prinx reads.

The concert tagged, ‘Homecoming’ is reportedly being hosted by the Rivers State government to celebrate the artiste’s recent Grammy win after it was initially criticised for not congratulating him.

The event which is meant to hold on Saturday 27th March 2021 at the EUI Event Centre also lined up other Rivers State-born artistes such as Timaya, Duncan Mighty, Omah Lay and Nissi, among others, to perform.

Despite the information not being formally confirmed yet, social media users have begun reacting to the tweet. While some opined that the self-proclaimed African Giant is worth every dime, others argued that it is a waste of the state’s resources.

Here are some of the comments from Twitter as monitored by TCN:

@ucheblaize: How will his homecoming increase Rivers State IGR? What’s the plan of Rivers State to make money from his visit? Government should be discouraged from spending on useless projects

@MyOyigbo_: Lol.. the way we twist things. Agree to disagree. It’s okay to honor Burna Boy but at the expense of tax payers money? Why does questioning the government on spending such a huge fund looks like limiting one’s progress? Why is everything taken for granted in Rivers state?

@EmodiOyinye: Inspirations differ..this recognition by the state Government might be the inspiration a kid needs not to join a criminal gang luring him.
The kid may just want to be recognized for something, like Burnaboy!
Also it may not just be one kid, there may be many like him!

@PremiumBrother: They should share the money among poor people in state.

@JnrMarcopolo: No it’s very stupid of you to say so. Imagine Burna Boy puts his Grammy and some awards plaques in Port Harcourt museum? You like it or not Rivers state would never release such money if it isn’t worth it, Wike is the best governor in Nigeria and you should trust the process as well.

@iamDeejayBash1: He shouldn’t have charged anything for this now after all it is home coming. Rivers people with money all the time.

@EnyieGabriels: You guys don’t know how much was spent when Agbani Derego visited Rivers State during Odili’s tenure because it was massive and it lasted for a week or so. Please they should welcome him if they have the money.
Born 29 years ago as Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu to a Yoruba mother and a Rivers State-born father, Burna Boy became the first Nigerian to win the Best Global Music Album for his Twice As Tall album.
