How I Turned African Heritage Into Global Dialogue — Mitchelle James

by The Culture Newspaper June 7, 2025
by The Culture Newspaper June 7, 2025

Visual artist, Mitchelle James, has shared how his early interest in philosophy and cultural identity evolved into a bold art practice that now connects Africa to the world; most recently through his participation in the Daphne Biennial in China.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, James explained that while his childhood passion was art, it was his studies in philosophy that shaped the depth and direction of his work.

“I actually studied Philosophy for my first degree. At the time, I felt like I had missed the chance to study art, but in hindsight, it was exactly what I needed. It led me to question what it means to rediscover yourself; not just as a person, but also as a nation. That’s how my journey in art found its true purpose,” he said.

Speaking on his recent exhibition at the Daphne Biennial in China, James said the event held more than just professional value. It was a powerful moment of cultural reflection.

He said, “The Daphne Biennial wasn’t just about displaying art. It was about being part of a bigger conversation; one between Africa and China, especially considering their long-standing economic relationship. I saw it as a chance to let my work be a bridge, to ask deeper questions about how these ties impact the African continent, both positively and negatively.”

Although his art now travels across borders, James stated that he stays rooted in his Nigerian identity.

“My work is always about Africa. I want to amplify what we already have, but often overlook. My goal is for my art to not only connect with global audiences but also spark reflection at home,” he added.
