Ghana’s Film Industry Stands On Shoulders Of Kwaw Ansah’s Works – Juliet Asante

The Ghanaian film industry celebrated its pioneer, Kwaw Ansah, at the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit’s Legacy Awards.

The legendary filmmaker was honoured with the prestigious Legendary Award for his invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the industry.

Kwaw Ansah, known for his groundbreaking works like ‘Love Brewed in the African Pot’ and ‘Heritage Africa’, has been a driving force behind Ghanaian cinema for decades.

His films have not only entertained but have also shed light on important social issues and cultural heritage.

Day 3 of the Second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit took place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

As part of the activities that took place on the day, the Legacy Awards honoured stakeholders in the film industry across the continent who have made significant contributions to the industry.

Celebrated Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson and Nigerian stars AY, Kunle Afolayan, and Funke Akindele were among the recipients. AY, in particular, garnered two awards for his significant contributions to the industry.

Other notable Ghanaian honorees included Shirley Frimpong Manso, Leila Djansi, Yolo Producer Ivan Quashigah and the legendary Kwaw Ansah, who was presented with the prestigious Legendary Award.

While presenting the prestigious Legendary Award to Kwaw Ansah, which was received on his behalf by his son, Juliet Asante eulogized., “ This is the last award we are giving because in Ghana we all know we stand on the shoulders of the works that he has done.. In fact, he represents the very essence of this award – the Legacy Award”.

The summit, organized by Ghana’s National Film Authority (NFA), has attracted a global audience, including executives from the African diaspora and representatives from investment bodies like Afreximbank and IFC

Day 1 of the summit was headlined by the iconic British actor and Chairman of IE7&The Akuna Group, Idris Elba while day 2 had the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II as the guest of Honour.

The minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture Mr Andrew Egyapa Mercer also graced day one and day two. The Summit which is aimed at fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth within the African cinema industry will end on Thursday, October 10.
