Disney has announced a “first-of-its-kind” partnership with a pan-African entertainment company, Kugali, to create an animated science fiction series titled Iwájú (The Future).

The Iwájú series will debut on the streaming service Disney+ in 2022.

Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney Animation Studios’, Jennifer Lee, is quoted as saying that the series is set in Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, and has “deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo”.

Disney animation tweeted a sneak peek at the series’ artwork and captioned it: “In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Disney Animation and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali will team up to create an all-new, science fiction series coming to #DisneyPlus in 2022: Iwájú. Check out a first look at visual development art from the series.”

Kugali was founded by three friends from Nigeria and Uganda.
