‘Wonma’, one of the tracks in rapper Olamide Badoo’s 9th studio album, ‘999’ is set to land him in big trouble as a social media comedian, Yinusa Sodiq Oriyomi, better known as Omopatakii, has accused him of copyright theft and is demanding N50 million damages.
Omopatakii alleged that Badoo’s (Olamide Adedeji) ‘Wonma’ was taken from an Instagram skit titled ‘Won ma do’, he created and released on August 17, 2019.
The comedian said that his skit argued that regardless of what you do for a woman, she will be slept with, using “won ma do”, as its catchphrase and the phrase ‘O le te obinrin lorun’, meaning “you cannot satisfy a woman” as the intro phrase for the skit.
Omopatakii further contended that the skit went viral on all social media platforms and that ‘Wonma’, the fifth track of Olamide’s ‘999’ released on February 10 was from his 2019 skit.
He said that Olamide’s ‘Wonma’ conveyed the same expression as his work, using the same phrase, ‘won ma do’ as the chorus and ‘O le te Obinrin lorun’ as the intro.
Omopatakii’s lawyers, AK & CO informed Badoo that their client’s rights are protected under the Nigerian Copyright Act. They further noted that Olamide’s continuous unauthorised use of the work is an infringement of Omopatakii’s copyright and intellectual property rights.
The lawyers, therefore, demanded N50 million damages from the CEO of YBNL Nation and demanded that he stopped using the work.
The lawyers said they would be constrained to pursue legal and other means in enforcing the comedian’s intellectual property rights if they didn’t hear from Olamide promptly.
Efforts to reach Olamide’s manager was unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.
