Despite how modernized society has become in the 21st century, some cultures and traditions, though seen as having a negative influence, are still practised silently. The Osu caste system in Igbo society is one such tradition. Although the system has lost much of its grip due to modernization, it continues to be practised quietly by some people.
In Ajuju Aha (The Question of a Name), contemporary Nigerian charcoal artist Kenneth Uzoigwe confronts the profound and enduring influence of inherited identity while probing silent histories carried through names. Rooted in deep reflections on the Osu caste system within Igbo society, the work explores how a name transcends a mere personal identifier, transforming instead into a vessel for generations of memory, prejudice, belonging, and exclusion.
Rather than relying on a single narrative, Uzoigwe’s composition constructs a visual tapestry of layered portraits, fragmented genealogies, handwritten notes, and partially obscured forms. This deliberate technique evokes the complexity and uncertainty surrounding personal and ancestral identity. The central question, “Osu?”, emerges not as a harsh accusation or a definitive conclusion but as an unsettling reminder of how inherited social labels continue to shape lives long after their historical origins have faded.
Executed masterfully in charcoal, the piece embraces softness, erasure, and ambiguity. These stylistic choices serve as a poignant metaphor for the fragile nature of memory and the heavy emotional weight of social history.
