Chidimma Adetshina: South Africans Call for Minister’s Sack After Beauty Queen Visited Cape Town

Some South Africans are calling for the removal of their Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, after Miss Universe First Runner-Up 2024, Chidimma Adeshina was spotted in Cape Town.

A viral video making the rounds on X allegedly shows the Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, hanging out at a café in Waterfront, Cape Town, sparking fury among some South Africans, with many questioning how she ‘’managed” to re-enter the country.

In October 2024, the Department of Home Affairs claimed that an investigation had found that there was prima facie evidence that Adeshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft.

The department further announced that it had cancelled Adetshina and her mother’s IDs and travel documents after they failed to adhere to an order to make submissions as to why their documents shouldn’t be revoked.

Adetshina was forced to withdraw from the Miss South Africa competition amidst backlash and accusations of not being a South African.

The beauty queen became a target of xenophobic attacks due to her mixed heritage – her father is Nigerian while her mother has Mozambican roots.

The situation escalated when claims of identity fraud related to her mother surfaced, prompting the Department to investigate her citizenship status.

Adetshina decided to step down from the SA competition and later went on to win the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant.
