Cartoon Network Series ‘Iyanu’ Set For African Debut

‘Iyanu‘, Lion Forge Entertainment’s animated series based on Nigerian culture and mythology, is set to make its African debut on June 13.

The series, based on the popular graphic novel series ‘Iyanu: Child of Wonder’ by Nigerian creator Roye Okupe, will debut on Showmax across 44 African countries.

Speaking on the African premiere, Okupe revealed that he created ‘Iyanu’ because he grew up in Lagos watching superhero stories.

He also expressed excitement for audiences across the continent to connect with a superhero who reflects their identity and experience the magic of the series.

“One of the reasons I started YouNeek Studios and created Iyanu is because I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, watching superhero stories on DStv. To now see Iyanu launching on Showmax across 44 African countries is truly a full-circle moment,” he said.

“I’m beyond thrilled that kids, adults, and families across the continent will get to see a superhero who looks, sounds, and feels like them. I can’t wait for audiences throughout Africa to experience the magic and wonder of Iyanu—a show that’s already capturing hearts around the world.”

Since its release in the US on Cartoon Network in April 2025, Iyanu has been critically acclaimed and commercially successful, ranking number one on Cartoon Network and among the top 10 kids’ and family series on Max.

Screen Rant praised it as “‘The Last Airbender’ and ‘Black Panther’ hybrid you did not know you needed”, while highlighting its unique blend of African mythology and modern superhero storytelling.

The series tells the story of Iyanu, a teenage orphan girl who spends her days studying Yoruba history and ancient arts alongside her friends Biyi and Toye.

The star-studded cast members include Serah Johnson as Iyanu, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Stella Damasus, Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello.
