To welcome the next generation of film critics to the Berlin Film Festival in Germany next February, applications for Berlinale Talents 2023 are now open.
Tagged Talent Press 2023, the Berlinale is inviting eight emerging film critics and journalists to Berlin.
In a statement made available to TCN, the Talent Press is an annual feature at the prestigious film festival.
“Well embedded in the Summit of Berlinale Talents with its 200 top emerging film professionals and guided by experienced mentors, the participants cover the festival’s A-list programme, creating reviews and interviews in a variety of formats, from written articles to podcasts to video essays and beyond.

“Talent Press isn’t only about producing work, but also exploring the future of film journalism itself, with the group meeting and discussing their insights with cinephiles worldwide,” the statement said. Recent editions of Talent Press have featured internal rounds with alumni filmmakers premiering their films in all sections, and distinguished guests such as director and critic Kleber Mendonça Filho, Berlinale Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian, Time magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek or Justin Chang from the Los Angeles Times.
With details available on Berlinale Talents website and applications expected by September 1, 2022, the Talent Press is aimed at emerging film critics and journalists who professionally contribute reviews, essays or interviews to film-related print or online publications.
Applicants are asked to submit three articles from the past year. “Our workshops are held in English, so you should feel confident conversing and publishing in English,” the statement added.
Selected critics and journalists will be able to attend Berlinale Talents talks, conduct interviews and access film screenings, with their work featured on the Berlinale Talents website, as well as those of our Talent Press partners Goethe-Institut and FIPRESCI.
“Last but not least, it provides the chance to make new and lasting connections with fellow critics from all over the world, to find colleagues in an often isolated profession.
“Meet our former Talent Press participants and explore the latest work from this year as well as coverage from Talent Press events in Rio, Sarajevo, Durban, Buenos Aires and Guadalajara – all on the Talent Press website.”
Beyond the Talent Press workshops, Berlinale Talents also features talks, think tanks and discussions offering endless networking opportunities and insights into the industry’s brightest creative minds. Recent guests have included Ari Wegner, Carla Simón, Zazie Beetz, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Céline Sciamma, Kirsten Johnson, Uli Hanisch, Cate Blanchett, Olafur Eliasson, Agnès Godard, Raoul Peck, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Jia Zhang-ke and many more. You’re guaranteed to leave the festival feeling inspired and ready for the next step. Check out our talks from 2022 and previous years.
