Batman has a strict “no guns” policy, so he would seem like a poor fit for the brutal world of 100 Bullets – but that didn’t stop Bullets co-creator Eduardo Risso from managing to bring the two worlds together, in a beautiful piece of crossover art, which features the “Grim Knight” version of Batman teaming up with 100 Bullets’ Agent Graves.
Most versions of Bruce Wayne wouldn’t look kindly on Agent Graves’ methods, but the Grim Knight is unique in the DC Multiverse.
Running for a hundred issues from 1999-2009, 100 Bullets had a very simple concept at its core: the mysterious Agent Graves approached individuals with a briefcase containing a gun, one-hundred untraceable rounds of ammunition and indisputable proof of someone who had ruined that person’s life. From that simple set-up, co-creators Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso weaved an epic crime tale of vast conspiracies, and political power plays, resulting in one of the greatest comic book series of all time. In an unlikely crossover, it might seem like Batman would be hunting Agent Graves, rather than teaming up with him.
Most versions of Bruce Wayne wouldn’t look kindly on Graves’ methods, but the Grim Knight is unique in the DC Multiverse. Hailing from a world in which a young Bruce Wayne killed Joe Chill, with the same gun that murdered his parents, the Grim Knight Batman trained himself to be proficient in the use of various firearms. This Batman is essentially DC’s answer to the Punisher, a tooled-up vigilante who has no problem executing Gotham City criminals. Risso previously teamed with Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV as the for 2018’s The Batman Who Laughs: The Grim Knight #1.
While an official Batman/100 Bullets team-up seems unlikely any time in the near future, fans can still enjoy Eduardo Risso’s brilliant artwork, pairing the Grim Knight and Agent Graves together in an epic gunfight.
Even before putting the Grim Knight’s origin to paper, Risso unquestionably ranked among the greatest Batman artists of all time. Storylines such as Broken City, Knight of Tomorrow and the Batman segments of Wednesday Comics stand as some of the best-looking books the Dark Knight has ever appeared in, all done in conjunction with Risso’s 100 Bullets collaborator Brian Azzarello. While an official Batman/100 Bullets team-up seems unlikely any time in the near future, fans can still enjoy Eduardo Risso’s brilliant artwork, pairing the Grim Knight and Agent Graves together in an epic gunfight.
