8 unique museums in the world

by The Culture Newspaper December 27, 2020
by The Culture Newspaper December 27, 2020

The word ‘museum’ hardly excites most people, especially those that have peculiar tastes in what they like to learn. Classic and contemporary art and historic artifacts generally send some people into an uninterested stupor. For these people – and those who like to switch up their tastes to accommodate stranger things- the following museums might be ideal subject matter for their museum visits. From dark and horrifying to fun and funky, here are nine strange museums that are the perfect visits if you are bored of the mainstream museums you have visited.

Everything has an equal and opposite reaction. And for every museum celebrating talented artists, there is one doing quite the opposite. The Museum of Bad Art displays and appreciates “bad art” from around the world. It’s so bad, it’s good. The concept is so manically brilliant that I would definitely suggest a visit if you are ever in Somerville, USA. And after all, art is believed to be rather subjective; maybe you will chance upon your favourite artwork.

Museum of Broken Relationships, Croatia and USA

As a teenager, burning, breaking or dumping your ex-partners belongings were the only acceptable way to part with them; I had learnt through countless poorly written young adult novels and lazily scripted romance shows and movies. As a grown-up, I understand that instead of following lunatic solutions offered by questionable pop culture, one can part with them maturely and maybe even donate them to the Museum of Broken Relationships. And oddly melancholic yet relieving idea, the Museum collects items belonging to the donors’ former lover. You could contribute to the incredible collection or go see it for yourself if you are in Zagreb, Croatia or Los Angeles, USA.

Osaka Ikeda Cupnoodles Museum, Japan

Every college student has an undeniably pathetic relationship with cup noodles, mostly to escape the same gravy garnished with different vegetables served in the canteen. Step back into that nostalgic relationship at the Osaka Ikeda Cupnoodles Museum, the birthplace of instant noodles. You can witness the process of manufacturing, the tunnel lined with approximately 800 ramen packages or even the exhibition of Instant Noodles.

Tickets: Free of charge.

International Spy Museum, Washington DC

As a child, if the thought of being a world-class spy sent you into a spiral of rolling on the floor, sneaking unsuccessfully behind doors and always having finger guns handy, this place is just for you. A not-so-secret spy exhibition, the museum educates about the history and present of the intelligence industry, including real-life cases, technology and weapons and tools used by spies. An intriguing and mysterious setting, the place offers various interactive services making it the perfect blend of fun and educational.

Tickets: $22.95 for adults

Underwater activities are aplenty and innovative. While scuba diving and corralling seem like a self-sustainable adventure, there is an additional option for the art aficionado. Cancun Underwater Museum of Art is an underwater display of sculptures by various artists. The experience is refreshing and unique. You can try the glass-bottom boat or diving for a more thrilling event.

Dummies; some find them endearing, others off-putting. Kentucky resider William Shakespeare Berger is a part of the former crowd. In fact, his collection of dummies was so alarmingly huge that he had to shift his figures to his garage and following that, construct a second building. At Vent Haven Museum you have over 1600 eyes on you. A shocking number of over 800 dummies, photos and historical books. You can also visit their conVENTion, a meeting for ventriloquism enthusiasts and professionals.

Time: Open only on appointment.

International Cryptozoology Museum, Maine, USA

The belief that hidden animals exist is inherent in a child’s mind. But as you get older, this turns into a dichotomy as your belief in science strengthens. The International Cryptozoology Museum holds a mission to study and display unidentified, rare animals. You can see strange creatures and the display may just convince you of the existence of Bigfoot. And even if it doesn’t, it is rather fascinating to see the exhibit.

Tickets: $10 for Adults

Torture Museum, Amsterdam

The name says it all. In an attempt to educate and inform people of the dark past of Europe, the Torture Museum dispays instruments of punishment from different parts of Europe. While the exhibit can be eerie and upsetting, it does introduce you to the darker parts of the past that are often avoided in conversation. Engravings illustrate the fascinating history behind the instruments.
