Grammy award-winning Nigerian artiste, Burna Boy, has won the ‘Best African Act’ category at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).

The ‘Last Last’ crooner trumped fellow compatriots, Ayra Starr and Tems; Ghanaian Sensation, Black Sheriff; Tanzanian singer Zuchu; and South African, Musa Keyz to emerge winner of the category.

Taylor Swift was the big winner at the award event, which was held at PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf, Germany on Sunday night.

The US singer took home four awards including ‘best artist,’ ‘best video,’ ‘best pop’ and ‘best long-form video’ for ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).’

Nicki Minaj was also awarded ‘best-hip-hop’ and ‘best song’ for ‘Super Freaky Girl,’ while Harry Styles won in the ‘best live’ category.

Seventeen, the South Korean boy band, beat Tems, the Nigerian songstress, to claim the ‘best new artiste’ category.

Hosted by Rita Ora and Taika Waititi, the live global music celebration featured electrifying performances from chart-topping artists and honoured fan favourites across 20 categories. It also featured a moving performance by Ukrainian Band Kalush Orchestra with a powerful display of support for Ukraine.

SPINALL, Äyanna and Nasty C closed the night performing “Power” flanked by roller skaters with tracking devices that made the lights on the stage form funky patterns.
