Sustainable Fashion: Lagos Fashion Week Is Turning Textile Waste Into Fashion

by The Culture Newspaper November 5, 2026

Discarded jeans and other textile materials found new life on the runway at Lagos Fashion Week as designers showcased creative pieces made from patchworked fabrics, highlighting the possibilities of sustainable fashion.

Among the designers exploring textile innovation was NKWO, whose collection featured reworked denim and patchwork, turning existing materials into distinctive fashion pieces.

The collection demonstrated how old denim and fabric remnants can be reimagined through creative design and craftsmanship rather than discarded. By combining different textile pieces, the designs gave used materials a fresh identity while maintaining their appeal as contemporary fashion.

The showcase reflected the principles of sustainable fashion, which encourage the reuse and recycling of materials, responsible production and reduced textile waste.

Textile waste remains a challenge for the fashion industry, as discarded clothing and leftover fabrics contribute to environmental pollution. Reworking existing materials offers designers an alternative to relying entirely on newly produced textiles.

NKWO’s presentation at the fashion week highlighted how sustainability can be incorporated into design without sacrificing creativity, offering a glimpse of how Nigerian designers can contribute to more responsible fashion practices.
