Spotify Reports 22% Surge In Afrobeats Listeners Worldwide

The numbers are in, and they tell a powerful story of explosive growth for African music on the world stage.

According to Spotify’s highly anticipated 2025 Wrapped report, the global audience for Afrobeats surged by 22% over the past year, underscoring the genre’s unstoppable rise as a dominant cultural force.

This international boom was fuelled by unprecedented engagement at its source. In Nigeria, listeners spent over 1.3 billion hours on the platform, with a staggering 82% year-on-year increase in time spent on local music.

The data paints a picture of a market in hyperdrive: daily music streams grew by 23%, while podcast consumption nearly doubled with a 97% increase in listening time.

“The 2025 Wrapped data for Nigeria showcases a music ecosystem that isn’t just thriving—it’s leading,we’re witnessing listeners champion both iconic legends and exciting new voices at an incredible pace,” said Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Beyond Nigeria, African sounds commanded the continent. Afrobeats, South Africa’s chart-conquering Amapiano, and raw, Gen Z-driven street-pop dominated playlists from Lagos to Nairobi to Johannesburg. While Nigerian and South African artists led the most-streamed ranks continent-wide, the breakout story of the year belonged to a new digital vanguard. A wave of young artists, propelled to fame through viral moments on TikTok and Instagram Reels, cracked the annual charts for the first time, proving social media’s pivotal role in breaking the next generation of stars.

The report confirms a powerful, two-way trend: as global listeners increasingly turn to African rhythms, audiences within Africa are diving deeper into their own rich musical landscapes more than ever before.

With an average listening age of just 25 in Nigeria, this connection points to a vibrant, digitally-native future for African music, echoing from local headphones to speakers across the globe.
