It was a historic night on Sunday for the cast and creative team of South Korean movie ‘Parasite’ as the film scooped four awards including the highly-coveted Oscars for ‘Best Picture’ at this year’s edition of the awards.
Having managed what no other subtitled film has done in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards, ‘Parasite’ is also the first non-English language film to win the top prize.
Producer Kwak Sin-ae, who received the award, said via translator: “I’m speechless. We never imagined this to happen. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now.”
It also won awards for best director, best international feature film and best original screenplay.
Nigerian-British actress, Cynthia Erivo lost the best actress award to Renee Zellweger who won the award for playing Judy Garland in ‘Judy’. Joaquin Phoenix emerged best actor for his role in ‘Joker’.
Brad Pitt picked up his first Oscars alongside Laura Dern for their supporting roles in ‘Once Upon A Time in Hollywood’ and ‘Marriage Story’ respectively.
