Saudi Arabia and China are taking steps toward a visa-free travel agreement that could open up major economic opportunities for both countries. Tourism, a key player in economic growth, stands to benefit the most from this initiative, fueling new streams of revenue and cultural exchange between the two nations.
Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Minister Ahmed Al Khateeb, on a recent visit to China, urged both governments to fast-track discussions on making travel between their countries hassle-free. He highlighted how a visa-free system could strengthen tourism ties and make travel more accessible for millions.
Saudi Arabia Sets Its Sights on Chinese Travelers
Describing China as “a huge market,” Al Khateeb shared Saudi Arabia’s ambition to attract more Chinese tourists, especially those taking long-haul flights to Europe and the Middle East. The goal is to capture 20-25% of these travelers, turning their attention toward Saudi Arabia as a top destination. Al Khateeb stressed that this move could be a game-changer for the Saudi tourism industry, driving significant growth and visibility in the global tourism landscape.
To make the travel experience smoother, Saudi Arabia is also exploring new ways to incorporate cutting-edge technology in airports, aiming to create a seamless journey for tourists from arrival to departure.
Record-Breaking Tourism Growth in Saudi Arabia
In 2023, over 100 million tourists chose Saudi Arabia as their destination—a massive 56% increase compared to 2019. Data from the Saudi Tourism Authority shows that of these visitors, 77 million were domestic travelers, while 27 million came from abroad, injecting more than US$67 billion into the Kingdom’s economy.
These figures reflect Saudi Arabia’s growing appeal as a travel destination and its efforts to make tourism a central pillar of its economic strategy. By fostering a visa-free agreement with China, the Kingdom could see even more impressive tourism milestones on the horizon.
