A missing Andy Warhol painting, worth nearly $200,000, has finally been recovered after being reported stolen from a luxurious Los Angeles home in 2021.
The iconic pop artist’s work, an unfinished portrait of former Soviet Union leader Vladimir Lenin, was stolen by an Ohio man, Brian Alec Light, 58, who is now facing up to ten years in federal prison.
Light is expected to plead guilty in the coming weeks to one count of interstate transportation of stolen goods.
After the stolen work vanished without a trace, the owner of the art piece reported the theft to law enforcement and to the West Hollywood gallery where the print was purchased, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The original thief, different from Light, first stole the print before bringing it into a local pawn shop who purchased it.
The pawn shop owner then phoned Light seeking help in selling the artwork – which Light knew was stolen.
Likely looking to make a pretty penny, Light then contacted an auction house to sell the print, just weeks after the original theft.
The high-value art was then shipped off to Dallas, as per Light’s request, where it was inspected and set to feature in an upcoming auction before an employee of the auction house keenly sought the opinion of the West Hollywood gallery – where it came from.

Immediately recognizing the painting’s stolen nature – the print just number 44 of 46 total Warhol made – the West Hollywood gallery notified the FBI.
In an attempt to cover his muddied tracks, Light falsified a receipt claiming he purchased the estimated $175,00 art before it was stolen in 2021.
The not-so-clever thief had to forfeit the stolen Warhol, which was subsequently retrieved by law enforcement officials, according to his plea agreement.
The FBI’s Art Crime Team continues to investigate the case as Light’s first court appearance is set for October 28.
The stolen Lenin print is just one of many pinched Warhol prints.
In 2016, seven of ten Andy Warhol prints from the Campbell Soup collection were stolen from the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri. The prints were valued around $500,000.
More recently, in 2024 a print of Warhol’s Mao Zedong was stolen from Orange Coast College in California. The print was reportedly gifted to the school in 2020 and is worth $50,000.
