Netflix, has announced the launch of its ‘Made in Africa’ collection to mark the Africa Month – a commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
With over 100 films from across the continent, the online subscription-based streaming platform will run the collection throughout the month of May.
“We’re excited to celebrate African stories and storytellers. We hope that by making these ‘Made in Africa’ titles easily available we will help ensure they are watched around the world,” said Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s Director of Licensing and Co-productions for Africa.
‘Made in Africa’ features Netflix originals like South Africa’s ‘Queen Sono’ starring Pearl Thusi, as well as previously acquired films like Nigeria’s ‘King of Boys’, ‘Wedding Party’, ‘Lionheart’ and more are all part of the collection. Others include the Malawian-based movie ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the WInd’, ‘Jerusalema’, ‘Uncovered’, ‘Potato Potahto’, ‘Joy’ and several others.
The collection also includes films that where predominantly shot on the ground in various countries, like the 2015 film Beast of No Nation, which was shot in Ghana, 2006’s Blood Diamond (South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Morocco), and the documentary Virunga (Congo) to name a few.
Netflix recently announced the renewal of its first African original, ‘Queen Sono’, as well as the upcoming release of two new originals: ‘Blood & Water’ and JIVA!, which are currently in production.
