The Nigerian government has congratulated actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham following the box office success of her new movie, Oversabi Aunty, which has grossed N1 billion in Nigerian cinemas.
The film, which was released on December 19, 2025, reached the N1 billion mark on Monday, according to industry figures.
Recall that ‘Oversabi Aunty’ has set a new box office record. The film is now the first Nollywood directorial debut to reach the milestone and ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. This was disclosed by the film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment.
Reacting to the milestone, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Film Corporation, described the achievement “as another strong signal of progress for the nation’s creative economy”.
In a statement shared by the Corporation’s managing director, Ali Nuhu, the agency said:
“This achievement places Ms. Abraham in the prestigious league of filmmakers whose works have not only connected culturally with audiences but have also demonstrated strong commercial viability in an increasingly competitive cinema market.
“Oversabi Aunty is a clear example of how locally rooted stories, when properly produced, and strategically marketed, can achieve extraordinary reach and impact.
“The film’s success reflects a deep understanding of the Nigerian audience, a strong distribution strategy, and the growing cinema-going culture across the country.”
The statement said the performance of Oversabi Aunty highlights the growing strength of Nigeria’s film industry and its contribution to the creative economy.
Also reacting to the success, Toyin Abraham thanked her fans and the general public in an Instagram post, expressing appreciation for their support since the film’s release.
