Embattled US music mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs, has been sentenced to 50 months in federal prison for two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, marking one of the most high-profile criminal convictions of a celebrity in recent years.
The sentence was handed down on Friday by US District Judge Arun Subramanian, who also imposed a $500,000 fine, the maximum allowable, against Combs.
Prosecutors had argued for a far longer prison term of more than 11 years, while Combs’ attorneys urged leniency and asked for a sentence of no more than 14 months, including time served.
Subramanian, however, said the punishment needed to reflect the seriousness of the crimes and “send a message to abusers and victims alike that abuse against women is met with real accountability.
“This is a serious sentence that reflects the gravity of your crimes and conduct.”
“You had the power and the resources to keep it going. And because you weren’t caught, this conduct occurred for over a decade.”
The judge directly referenced testimony and evidence presented at trial, including texts, emails, and images documenting Combs’ abuse of the women he professed to love.
This included a widely circulated video of Combs’ assault of singer Cassie Ventura at an Intercontinental Hotel in 2024.
“We saw the video of your savage beating of Ms. Ventura,” Subramanian said.
“This was subjugation, and it drove both Ms. Ventura and Jane to thoughts of ending their lives. That is the reality of what happened.”
The judge further stated that Combs “irreparably harmed” two women, adding that his behavior occurred “physically, emotionally and psychologically” with “tremendous frequency” over the years.
In a dramatic last-minute move, Combs’ legal team released a documentary-style video before sentencing, highlighting his philanthropy, family life and public persona.
The video was accompanied by a letter from Combs himself — a stark contrast to his defense’s consistent claims of innocence and accusations that the government had unfairly targeted him.
When given the chance to speak, Combs apologi#ed in court, calling his actions “disgusting, shameful and sick.”
He also addressed victims directly, including “all the victims of domestic violence.”
But Subramanian questioned the sincerity of Combs’ remorse, noting that he continued to assault one of his victims even after authorities executed search warrants and he had publicly apologi#ed on Instagram.
The judge acknowledged that the sentence represents “hard time” away from Combs’ family but said there is “a light at the end of the tunnel.”
“These letters, all those letters that I saw, show that you have a universe of people who love you,” Subramanian said.
“Let them lift you up now, just like you’ve lifted them up for so many years.”
Combs’ lawyers are widely expected to appeal the conviction and sentencing.
CNN legal analyst Laura Coates noted that every word of Subramanian’s ruling was being carefully recorded, given the likelihood of an appellate challenge.
Despite being acquitted of more serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges, which could have carried a life sentence, Combs’ conviction and sentencing marked a historic fall from grace for one of the music industry’s most influential figures.
Subramanian said outpatient treatment and mental health programmes would also be ordered for Combs during and after his prison term.
