Culture Development: Winners Emerge In The Prince Claus Awards

For their excellent, ground-breaking work in culture and development, Ibrahim Mahama, Tunakaimanu Fielakepa and Diamantina Arcoiris have emerged as some of the winners of the 2020 Prince Claus Laureates announced on Wednesday.

Ibrahim Mahama, a Visual artist from Ghana went home with the Principal Prince Claus Laureate, while Açık Radyo, an Independent radio from Turkey, Diamantina Arcoiris a Fashion designer from Colombia, Fendika Cultural Centre, a Music and cultural center from Ethiopia, Tunakaimanu Fielakepa, a Textile arts and cultural heritage expert from Tonga, and m7red an Architecture and activist network from Argentina carted home the Prince Claus Laureates. Hira Nabi, a Filmmaker from Pakistan took home the Next Generation Prince Claus Laureate.

The successful 2020 Prince Claus Laureates were announced on the 2nd of December in an online ceremony. Viewers watching from around the world were taken on a tour of the Royal Palace Amsterdam where His Royal Highness, Prince Constantijn, of the Netherlands, Honorary Chair of the Prince Claus Fund, and the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Sigrid Kaag, spoke about the power And importance of culture.

To select the successful Laureates, the Prince Claus Awards Committee consists of independent experts from different countries representing a broad range of disciplines. The Awards Committee provided advice to the Prince Claus Fund Board on the annual selection of the laureates.

Members of the Awards Committee provide their services voluntarily for a term of two years which can be extended by two more years.

The 2020 Prince Claus Awards Committee consisted of Manuel de Rivero (Chair), Architect and Urbanist, Lima, Peru, Hoor Al Qasimi, Curator and Visual Artist, Sharjah, Emirate of Sharjah, Sandra den Hamer, Director of the Eye Film Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Amar Kanwar, Visual Artist and Filmmaker, Delhi, India, Neo Muyanga, Composer and musician, Cape Town, South Africa while Fariba Derakhshani served as the Program Coordinator of the Awards and Secretary to the Awards Committee.

The Prince Claus Awards honor individuals and organizations for their excellent, ground-breaking work in culture and development. Since 1997, the Prince Claus Fund has presented Awards to individuals, groups and organizations whose cultural actions have a positive impact on their societies, primarily in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe.

ABOUT THE AWARDS
Since 1997, the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development has presented Prince Claus Awards to individuals, groups and organisations whose cultural actions have a positive impact on their societies, primarily in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. In keeping with the Prince Claus Fund’s guiding principles, the awards highlight significant contributions in regions where resources or opportunities for cultural expression are limited.
