Universal Studios has unveiled an extended theatrical release schedule for its latest slate of movies, including filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated ‘The Odyssey’.
Nolan, an advocate of theatrical releases (movie releases in cinemas), ended his decade-long partnership with Warner Bros during the pandemic, when the film company decided to release its film slate simultaneously in cinemas and on its streaming platform, HBO Max.
The film director then went on to partner with Universal Studios, where he is currently making the classical Greek fantasy/mythology adventure ‘The Odyssey’.
At present, cinema tickets for the film’s screening on its release date, July 17, 2026, have been fully booked in advance by Nolan’s fans. And with Universal Studios’ recent announcement, fans/theatre-goers will have ample time to see the movie in cinemas before its release on video-on-demand and streaming platforms.
According to the studio’s announcement, its upcoming slate of films will have extended theatrical window (showings) of at least five weekends in 2026, before expanding to seven weekends in 2027. This means a lot of cinema screen time for Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Shrek 5’, the highly anticipated live-action sequel of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ starring Emily Blunt, ‘Minions & Monsters’, among others.
Chairwoman of NBC Universal Entertainment, Donna Langley, said, “Our windowing strategy has always been designed to evolve with the marketplace, but we firmly believe in the primacy of theatrical exclusivity and working closely with our exhibition partners to support a healthy, sustainable theatrical ecosystem.”
Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ boasts a star-studded cast with Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as ‘Telemachus’, Zendaya as ‘Athena’, Robert Pattinson as ‘Antinous’, Benny Safdie as ‘Agamemnon’, Jon Bernthal as ‘Menelaus’, Mia Goth as ‘Melantho’, Himesh Patel as ‘Eurylochus’, and John Leguizamo as ‘Eumaeus’ among others.
