Nigerian artistes Burna Boy and Rema have been nominated for the 2020 MTV EMAs Best African Act.

This year’s nominees list seems to be a keenly contested one as last year’s winner and Grammy nominee, Burna Boy, is nominated yet again while 20-year-old rapper, Rema, whose career has seen a steady rise since he came to fame also secured a spot on the list.

Other artistes on the list include South African artistes, Master KG, Kabza de Small as well as DJ Maphorisa; Ugandan Afrobeats artiste, Sheeba; and Gaz Mawete from Democratic Republic of Congo.

Commenting on the announcement, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ViacomCBS Networks Africa, Monde Twala said, “The 2020 MTV EMAs is one of the biggest entertainment stages in the world and this year’s African nominees are undoubtedly making their presence felt globally. This affirms our commitment to ensuring that we continue to celebrate our diverse talent on international platforms. Congratulations to all our African nominees on this achievement.”

Reacting to his nomination, Burna Boy said, “A big thank you to my MTV family for nominating me again for this award and to my fans all over the world for listening to and supporting my music.“

Nigerian artistes have dominated the Best African Act category in three years in a row. Burna Boy won in 2019 and Tiwa Savage made history by being the first Black African female to win in 2018. Davido scooped the award in 2017.

The two-hour “2020 MTV EMAs” will air globally on MTV in 180 countries and territories on Sunday, November 8, 2020.
