Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has been praised online after Nigerian writer and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue, shared how the literary icon quietly settled his outstanding hospital bill following a major knee surgery.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Nwelue recounted telling Soyinka that his knee surgery had cost about ₦39 million, with about ₦10 million still owed to the hospital.
According to him, Soyinka immediately offered to help, saying: “Let me get to Lagos this Friday and see what I can send.”
Nwelue said he subsequently forwarded the hospital’s bank details to the Nobel Laureate.
A few days later, Soyinka followed up to ensure the transfer had gone through, writing: “Receiving no notification from you, I asked my bank for confirmation that the money has been sent. Forwarding the affirmation documents separately from the bank in case you need to track the funds… I just wish to ensure it’s landed in the right place.”
When Nwelue contacted the hospital, he was informed that the entire outstanding bill had been paid.
Overwhelmed by the gesture, the writer reflected, “What could I have done without him?”
The touching account has sparked admiration across social media, with many Nigerians commending Soyinka’s quiet generosity and describing the act as another example of the Nobel Laureate’s enduring compassion and willingness to support others away from the spotlight.
