The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has announced its readiness to launch the guild’s first ever health insurance scheme.
A statement signed by veteran actress and chairperson of the official launch committee, Ms. Joke Silva, noted that the scheme seeks to restore the dignity of professionals in the industry.
According to the statement, the scheme was necessitated by an urgent need to stem the tide of a large number of actors who resort to seeking financial assistance online to address urgent medical challenges despite the strides by the Nigerian film industry globally.
“With this AGN Health Insurance Scheme, registered members of the guild will have access to essential medical and health care services as the need arises,” Ms. Silva said.
TCN had earlier reported that the guild signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Medicard Health Management, in July, to stop the practice of soliciting funds for medical emergencies among members.
“The AGN Health Insurance Scheme will enable actors attend to their medical needs and will position AGN as, it truly is, a responsible and responsive organisation,” the statement stated.
A fund to assist indigent actors pay regular premiums on their medical insurance will also be launched at the event.
The virtual launch event, which is scheduled for Monday August 17, is expected to draw guests from the film industry, government, corporate world and the media, among others.
