Again, Afrobeats Goes To Nottinghill Carnival

Pulsating sounds of contemporary Nigerian sounds will once again be heard on Monday, August 28 as the famous Notting Hill carnival holds in West London.

Like last year, the Nigerian Corner on Adela Street at the carnival will again transform into Afribeats Corner on this Bank Holiday Monday, which is the grand finale of the two-day carnival, courtesy of the tripartite partnership from R70, DJA Media and GI Roadshow.

Every year, more than two million people attend the two-day colourful but sometimes chaotic carnival that celebrates the Carribean culture, heritage, food and music.

But many Africans in the diaspora also join in the celebration that traditionally holds in the last weekend of August.

Thus the Adela Street ground, for many years, has always played host to the Nigerian revellers at the carnival.

This year’s edition is expected to be a huge Afrobeats ball, according to filmmaker and entertainment lawyer, Ayo Shonaiya, who leads the team that provides the unique platform for Nigeria’s pop culture to be on display at the carnival.

He tells TCN that like last year’s edition, Monday’s show will feature the best of Nigerian music stars, DJs, hypemen and celebrities who have been lined up to mount the stage and thrill the audience between 12noon and 7pm.

With support from Saglev, the brand with a vision of providing electric vehicles for sub-Sahara Africa, Shonaiya says a great time awaits revellers that are expected to thronge the carnival.

Shonaiya called the shots at the carnival in 2016 and 2017 when the space wore the toga of ‘Lagos Corner’ with live transmission of the events by the Lagos Television (Ltv) courtesy of the funding support by the Lagos State Government.

Since its inception in 1966 as a huge afro-carribean street party, the carnival has held every year except in 2020 and 2021 due to covid19 pandemic.
