Ahead of the fifth edition of the annual Lagos City Marathon next month, the headline sponsor of the event, Access Bank Plc, has revealed that its sponsorship of the world-class event is geared towards tourism promotions as well as improving the economic and social outlook of Lagos State.

The Group Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, said that the bank was poised to support the economic and social development of the communities in which it operates and to assist in providing a consistent platform for Tourism to thrive in the state.

“This is the reason we have been sponsoring the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon since 2016 in order to make Lagos State more attractive to tourists and foreign investors alike. We have also used this platform as an avenue to create more jobs and opportunities to thousands in the state,” he stated.

Wigwe added that in order to ensure that the impact and sustenance of the marathon is felt by all sundry, the bank has begun sponsorship of marathons and other sporting events across the country, highlighting its sponsorship of the Abeokuta Marathon as well.

In it’s fifth edition this year, the Lagos City Marathon according to Wigwe is already a silver label marathon, which has recorded the participation of over 100,000 athletes for its last two editions from around the world.

French athlete and winner of the 2018 edition, Abraham Kiptorich, holds the marathon’s record, having completed the course in 2 hours 15 minutes and four seconds.

This year’s edition is slated for Saturday February 8 and offers a cumulative prize of 500,000 US Dollars to contestants.
