Kenya-based Digital Cinema Extension – MyMovies.Africa™, is launching a Monthly online Watch Party for Animations, Documentaries, Features and Shorts, called #TheGreatNightIn.
The debut of #TheGreatNightIn will be the Highlight of MyMovies.Africa™‘s 2nd Birthday Celebrations, on Sunday 26th September (7.30pm – 9.30pm EAT), Internationally-acclaimed True Story of Africa’s first female Lacrosse Team, from the Rift Valley in Kenya, and their Journey across the Globe to the 2019 World Championships, entitled: SLEEPING WARRIOR (16+).
Proceeds of this Edition of #TheGreatNightIn shall go to the Sleeping Warrior Education Fund, which is empowering the Girls in the Film to University in Kenya.
According to Co-Founder, Business and Regulatory Director, Mike Strano, this was possible due to the creation of an additional online screening module.
“In June, our Software Developers created an additional Online Screening module for MyMovies.Africa™, which has been for Rentals and Purchases.
This was in time for Rwandans around the World to watch THE 600 together as a community, on their Liberation Day of 4th July, known as Kwibohora. Hundreds of Viewers simply Registered for a Screening – like they would for a ZOOM Webinar, then Bought a Ticket – which included a FREE 7-Day Rental to Re-watch, and joined via ZOOM with their Community” he said.
Similarly, Trushna Buddhdev-Patel – Co-Founder and Content Director of MyMovies.Africa™ reveals the readiness of the platform to making more titles available on the platform.
“On the back of this success, MyMovies.Africa™ would like to make more of our Titles available for #TheGreatNightIn, where Viewers can also exclusively Meet the Cast and Crew via ZOOM”, says Trushna Buddhdev-Patel – Co-Founder & Content Director.
Before and after the Screening, viewers will be able to Interact with Sharon Opari – who the Documentary follows, as well as the Directors – Janet Wells and Timothy Mwaura, plus the Producer – Nina Ruiz.
Timothy Owase – Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Film Commission will be the Guest of Honour at the event.
Sleeping Warrior has already secured numerous Laurels at the African Film Festival New Zealand (AFFNZ), AFIN International Film Festival, Around International Film Festival (ARFF) in Barcelona, Blackstar International Film Festival (BIFF) in Ghana, Cannes World Film Festival, Chicago Indie Film Awards, European Cinematography Awards (ECA), Global Peace Film Festival, Houston International Sports Film Festival, New York Independent Cinema Awards, Toronto Independent Film Festival of Cift and Toronto International Women Film Festival.
Sleeping Warrior focused on Sharon Opari – a beautiful and dignified 18-year-old girl who was given away at age 7 to work as a maid, after her HIV-infected mother was sent to prison.
Overcoming poverty, malaria and abuse, Sharon was chosen to represent Kenya at the World Lacrosse Championships. Before Lacrosse, Sharon had never left her village and now we are privileged to watch as she traveled across the world to be transformed forever by her time in Canada.
She experienced joy as the team became the darling of the tournament, and were adopted by the local town (Peterborough, Ontario) thereby becoming mini-celebrities. We then watched her heartbreak as the team is knocked-out of the tournament. We also saw as Sharon blossomed while deepening her friendships with her teammates; but then saw her despair as she realised the dream will come to an end, and she will return to her life as a “slave” back in Kenya.
Before and after Canada, we followed Sharon as she tried to find her “real” family. Sharon had always been told her biological Mother had died in prison, the story followed her quest to find her mother’s grave – only to discover that her mother might be alive after all. We watched as Sharon uncovered old Secrets, and encountered shady characters, and her perseverance in her quest for the truth.
