Nigerian singing sensation, Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, has made history at the 2022 BET awards as she became the first African female to win the Best International Act Category.
The 2022 award ceremony was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, USA. The BET Awards celebrate Black excellence in music, culture and sports.
Tems edged out fellow compatriot Fireboy, Dave (UK), Dinos (France), Fally Ipupa (Congo), Little Simz (UK), Ludmilla (Brazil), Major League Djz (South Africa), and Tayc (France) to emerge winner in the category.
She also clinched the Best Collaboration Award with Wizkid’s Essence (remix) featuring Justin Bieber.
The talented singer had a wonderful year in 2021 with her contributions on Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ earning her wide international recognition. ‘Essence’ was tagged Summer Song of the Year 2021, earning a remix with Candian singer, Justin Bieber.
She also featured on Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ album which further proved her status as one of Nigeria’s biggest international music exports.
With her honour at the 2022 BET awards, Tems joins 2baba, Dbanj, Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as Nigerians who have won the BET Awards.
