Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has received Spotify’s prestigious Billion Streams plaque after her collaboration on Wait For U with Future and Drake surpassed one billion streams on the platform.

The achievement places Tems among a select group of Afrobeats artists, including Wizkid, Rema, and Tyla, who have also earned Spotify’s Billion plaque.

Wait For U was released in 2022 and marked a significant milestone in Tems’ career. The track earned her a Grammy Award in 2023 in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category, making her one of the few African artists to win the honor.

The song also made history by debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Tems the first African artist to achieve a number-one debut on the chart.

Since her global breakout, Tems has continued to receive international recognition for her distinct sound and contributions to Afrobeats and global pop music.

This latest milestone with Spotify further cements her status as one of the continent’s most influential music exports.

Tems has previously featured on major international projects, including songs with Beyoncé, Drake, and Rihanna, and continues to shape the narrative around African music on the global stage.

Her work has been praised for its authenticity, soulful vocals, and genre-blending style that resonates with diverse audiences worldwide.
