Onobiren Takes A Bow After N138.1m Box Office Run

After an extraordinary seven-week run in cinemas, ‘Onobiren’ is taking a bow in grand style, firmly establishing itself as a cultural blockbuster, box office hit, and record-setting Nollywood release of 2026.

The film delivered an impressive N138.1 million at the box office within just seven weeks, a feat that underscores its status as a true breakout cinema success.

From its debut, ‘Onobiren’ captured the attention of audiences, quickly rising to become the number one film in West Africa for two consecutive weeks and emerging as the highest-grossing March 2026 release. Its momentum only grew stronger as it crossed the N100 million mark in just three weeks, setting the tone for what would become one of the most remarkable cinema runs of the year.

Beyond the numbers, the film has redefined benchmarks within Nollywood, becoming the highest-grossing film about women, the highest-grossing South South production, and the highest-grossing faith-based film, while also standing out as a major achievement for a non-actor producer.

With a stellar 9.1 IMDb rating and a place among the top three Nollywood releases of 2026, Onobiren has combined commercial success with strong audience reception, further cementing its impact.

Speaking on the film’s success, executive producer and writer Laju Iren expressed heartfelt gratitude:

“The success of Onobiren is because of everyone who showed up for us, the press, the cinema community, our partners, the critics, and every single supporter.

To the women who came out en masse, the men who stood with us, and everyone who bought a ticket, whether one or a hundred, you made this possible. From Nigeria to the world, this was a collective effort. We made history together, and I’m deeply grateful. And now, Onobiren continues its journey, coming to virtual cinemas from May 1st to 5th so even more people can experience it”, she said .
