New AMP Chairman Aims To Transform FCT Into A Film Production Hub

by The Culture Newspaper August 22, 2025
by The Culture Newspaper August 22, 2025

In his inaugural speech, newly elected Chairman, FCT Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Desmond Utomwen said his victory was born out of a passion to transform the FCT into a thriving film hub.

Utomwen’s victory comes after the chapter’s recent election which saw him emerge winner against his challenger Chukwudi Uzochukwu.

A veteran filmmaker and industry advocate, Utomwen is no newcomer in the corridors of leadership, having served as the chapter’s Publicity Secretary (2019 – 2025), and spearheaded high impact projects like the SDGs Short Film Challenge & Awards, a national festival that leverages on storytelling to drive social change, spotlight emerging talent, and promote local narratives to a global audience.

In addition to the rich film background he brings to the new position, Utomwen’s administration will focus on four priority areas to help bring his vision for the FCT film industry to life. They include, professional development and funding access for members, strategic partnerships to unlock new opportunities locally and internationally, enhanced welfare, inclusion and visibility for members, and transformation of the FCT into a dynamic filmmaking hub in Nigeria.

To help him achieve his vision are his fellow elected executives – Vice Chairman, Alhaji Idris Aminu, Secretary, Daniel Okwa, Publicity Secretary, Eze Nnedinso Patience, Welfare Secretary, Chiamaka Maureen Uchechi, and Social Secretary, Mercy Maduka Nnochiri.

Optimistic of the new executive, members and stakeholders believe Utomwen’s leadership will foster growth, innovation and greater opportunities for filmmakers in the region.
