Lagos Announces Traffic Diversions Ahead Of Eyo Festival

The Lagos State Government has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions ahead of Saturday’s Eyo Festival.

The festival, scheduled to take place at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island, will be witnessed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his wife, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other senior government officials.

In a statement issued on Friday, the state government said partial traffic restrictions would be implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of the cultural celebration.

According to the statement, the affected routes include the Third Mainland Bridge exit towards Adeniji Adele, the Adeniji Adele ramps (both inbound and outbound), Simpson Bridge connecting Osborne to Sura, as well as key areas such as Obalende, CMS, Marina, Apogbon and Idumota.

Motorists were advised to plan their journeys in advance and make use of alternative routes, as officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, will be deployed to manage traffic flow.

“Motorists are advised to plan ahead and use alternative routes. LASTMA officials will be on ground to ensure effective traffic control,” the government said.

The Eyo Festival, a major cultural event in Lagos Island, is traditionally held to honour departed monarchs, chiefs and other notable personalities.

Those to be celebrated during Saturday’s outing include the late Iyaloja-General, Chief Abibat Mogaji, mother of President Tinubu; the first military governor of Lagos State, General Mobolaji Johnson; the state’s first civilian governor, Alhaja Lateef Jakande; and a former Third Republic governor, Sir Michael Otedola.

Speaking on the significance of the festival, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Eyo Festival as a strong symbol of Lagos’ identity and cultural continuity.

“The Eyo Festival holding on Saturday will be a day of joy and pride for Lagos,” the governor said.

“It will be colourful and joyous, showcasing the depth of our rich cultural heritage to both local and international audiences.”
