As Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (FFK) the movie continues to stir positive conversations after its limited run at the cinemas, the director of the acclaimed biopic on the legendary mother of Afrobeat music, Bolanle Austen-Peters, is being applauded for the great work achieved on the movie.

A lawyer-turned theatre director and filmmaker, Austen-Peters is the acclaimed director of “The Bling Lagosians”, “Collision Course” and “Man of God”.

Her latest, FRK, which will soon be available for wider viewing on Amazon Prime Video, has been submitted to the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) for consideration for the Acadeny Awards shortlist.

“Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti”, a biographical film that pays tribute to one of the most influential figures in African history, takes the viewers on an epic journey through the life and times of the late Madam Ransome-Kuti, a woman who defied the odds and challenged the status quo in her quest for freedom, equality, and dignity.

Funmilayo was not only an activist, but also an educator, a philanthropist, and a mother, whose legacy lives on in her children and grandchildren, especially the renowned Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

After one week of screening at Silverbird Cinema in Lagos, the film comes across to audiences as a stunning portrayal of Funmilayo’s courage, vision, and impact that is bound to captivate and inspire everyone who sees it.

In the wake of its limited cinema release, the movie has garnered enthusiastic acclaim from both critics and the general public.

Here’s a glimpse into the reviews:

“In the end, this film will be historically significant not because of how well it represents the past but how powerfully it inspires our future. Because FUNMILAYO is a love story, a story of self-discovery, self-assertion. It is also a hero’s tale inspiring in us the courage to speak truth to power and the commitment to a cause bigger than self. FUNMILAYO is also an important idea. Change is possible when we choose to act. An idea that the only ceiling to leave unbroken is the sky and that environmental, cultural and political bias only calls to the warrior within us to stand. FUNMILAYO is simply a profound and provocative cinematic experience. And by all measure an artistic success.”

A Gift to Womanhood:
“A huge congratulations (to Bolanle Austen-Peters) for the great directorial work achieved in your latest film, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
The accomplishments recorded in the movie, both technical and artistic, are a resounding salute to your clear vision and relentless dedication to telling authentic African stories that are uplifting. In telling the touching, ferocious story of Fela’s mother – Funmilayo – as a rare heroine of her generation, you demonstrated an extraordinary flair for history and its inherent lessons to humanity. Yet, in so doing, you turned ‘Funmilayo the lioness’ into a gift for womanhood. A gift that serves as a reminder about what was possible; yet a gift that signals what is still possible…when a people rise up with vigour and in one voice to demand justice and a better deal. Thanks for dishing out Funmilayo so sumptuously. And, of course, welcome, finally, to the league of directors that count….and care! Congratulations!!!”
– Steve Ayorinde

“Thank you again for producing such an eye opening and inspirational movie. As a young lady, I keep thinking back to the story told in that movie and I can’t help but want to do more, push through life’s hardship, empower my fellow woman and never let any circumstance keep me from being exceptional. Your creativity and diligence in expressing your craft is truly a beautiful to behold. Please don’t stop being you and pushing through to deliver such stories.” – Anieze Osakwe
