BTS Declines Grammy Consideration, Says Music Should Transcend Language And Region

Global K-pop sensation BTS has announced that it will not submit its music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, saying it wants its work to be appreciated “for what it is” rather than being defined by language or region.

In a coordinated statement shared across the seven members’ social media accounts on Wednesday, the group explained its decision.

“We decided not to submit to the Grammys this year. We want music to be heard and loved for what it is, rather than categorized by region or language.”

The announcement comes weeks after the Recording Academy introduced five new Grammy categories, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, a move that has generated intense debate among fans and music industry observers.

The new category is intended to recognise performances originating from or widely recognised in Asian markets that make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. However, many fans have criticised the move, arguing that it separates Asian artists from mainstream Grammy categories rather than promoting inclusion.

BTS had been widely expected to be among the leading contenders for the inaugural award following the release of their fifth studio album, Arirang, their first full-length project after nearly four years on hiatus.

Despite becoming one of the world’s most successful music groups, with multiple Billboard chart-toppers, sold-out stadium tours and major wins at the American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards, the Grammy remains the one major accolade the group has yet to secure.

The decision has been widely interpreted by fans as a statement against what they view as the Recording Academy’s long-standing approach to recognising non-Western artists.

Music critic Lim Hee-yun described the move as a challenge to the Grammys’ traditional framework, suggesting that BTS’s influence could encourage broader conversations about how global artists are recognised within the awards.

Others, however, argue that the Grammys should not be regarded as the ultimate measure of success for BTS or K-pop, noting that the awards primarily reflect the American music industry rather than the global music landscape.

For many fans, the group’s decision reinforces a message they have championed for years: that music should be judged by its artistry and impact, not by the language it is sung in or the region from which it originates.
