May 9, 2026, has been set for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, with early details pointing to a celebration that places both industry veterans and behind-the-scenes creatives at its centre.
At the announcement event held last Thursday, veteran actress Joke Silva was named Head Judge, a role that draws on her decades-long presence in film and television.
This year’s edition leans deliberately into craftsmanship, recognising the writers, directors, editors, designers, and technicians whose dedication builds African cinema behind the scenes.
Alongside this focus is the presence of Don Julio as headline sponsor, marking the first time a luxury spirits brand has taken on that role at the awards. As Segun Ogunleye, Head of Marketing, Africa Partner Markets, Diageo, noted: “This partnership reflects not only the strength and diversity… but also our commitment to showing up in moments of celebration, recognition, and shared cultural pride. It is rooted in shared values of passion, craftsmanship, and luxury…”
Speaking at the unveiling, MultiChoice West Africa’s Executive Head of Content and Channels, Atinuke Babatunde, reflected on the reach of African storytelling, noting how films and television series continue to mirror everyday life across cities such as Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, and Johannesburg. She reiterated the AMVCA’s role not just as an awards platform, but as a cultural moment that connects audiences across the continent.
The upcoming edition will feature 32 categories, spanning jury-decided and audience-voted awards, alongside special recognitions including Lifetime Achievement and the Trailblazer honour. The event will also include key pre-award activities such as Icons Night and Cultural Day, leading up to the main ceremony.
