‘This year’s Baftas were boring and out of touch’
‘For all the cringeworthy lip service to diversity and feminism, how has a film as white and male as All Quiet still triumphed to this extent?’
Bafta Film Awards tonight – unmemorable in most ways, the highlights including a lovable host in the form of Richard E Grant, Very Good Sleeves on some serious red carpet gowns, and a few rare moments of actual pathos in the form of wins and gracious speeches for relative industry newcomers.February 18, 2023 – 07:29 GMT Danielle Stacey The Prince and Princess of Wales are set to attend the 2023 BAFTAs on Sunday night – their first appearance at the bash since 2020.February 19, 2023 – 08:28 GMT Ainhoa Barcelona The red carpet will be rolled out on Sunday night for the 2023 BAFTAs ceremony, with the Prince and Princess of Wales as the guests of honour.Copy link The Prince and Princess of Wales looked delighted to be back for the first time since 2020 (Picture: Getty/REX) Prince William and Kate Middleton have paid their first visit to the Bafta film awards in three years.
And yet.And yet! Somehow they still managed to set teeth on edge across the film industry, and I expect among some of the audience of the Royal Festival Hall, too.WATCH: Kate’s most dazzling BAFTA dresses through the years Loading the player.Perhaps the initial egregious annoyance came at the beginning: an opening song that induced one of the most out-of-body-experience levels of cringe I’ve ever had whilst watching television..Ariana DeBose – the talented and lovely star of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story – must have been roped into a tone-deaf girlboss musical medley which included shout-outs to women nominees present in between songs like “Sisters are Doing it For Themselves”..But this teeth-grinding display set the tone for a night of frustration which culminated in a Best Film win for a nominee so utterly vanilla that you have to wonder if the voters actually watched any of the others in the lineup. The last time she wore the dress, she paired it with earrings that once belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales.
To be fair, All Quiet on the Western Front is far from a bad movie, and it has been heavily nominated across the Academy Awards as well as the 14 nods it got here. The ceremony was held virtually in 2021 due to the pandemic, and while William had been due to record a video message, he was forced to pull out after the death of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh. And in 2021, the Prince pulled out last-minute at the virtual ceremony due to the sudden passing of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh. But the German Netflix drama is no more or less than the sum of its parts: a well-crafted period war flick, doing nothing fresh, and certainly nothing as a film like Todd Field’s Tár or the rightly-adored Banshees of Inisherin. Both of those films are more deserving, audacious, contemplative forms of cinematic storytelling, with complex and elegant ideas.William and Kate at the 2020 BAFTAs This year, William and Kate will watch the awards ceremony before meeting category winners and EE Rising Star Award nominees. For All Quiet to sweep up the way it has with a message that largely amounts to “war is hell” feels like an unbelievably boring decision by the voting body.ROYALS: Prince William and Kate Middleton’s special treat for Prince George and Princess Charlotte revealed That year marked William’s tenth year as President of BAFTA and he presented the Fellowship award to film producer Kathleen Kennedy, who has produced Star Wars movies, including The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and Rogue One, as well as Jurassic Park, ET The Extra Terrestrial and the Back to the Future trilogy.(And begs the question: for all the cringeworthy lip service to diversity and feminism, how has a film as white and male as All Quiet still triumphed to this extent?) More from Opinion. The Princess has previously wowed in an array of showstopping looks at the awards, including a bardot-style floral dress and a white one-shoulder gown, both by Alexander McQueen.
