The Mighty Sparrow, who helped export calypso music to the masses beginning in the 1950s, has died. He was 91.
Born Slinger Francisco, he died peacefully surrounded by his family in New York, his family said in a statement. His death came after a “brief illness,” the statement said, without disclosing any other details.
“He was an institution in the entertainment industry, well admired for his skill and finesse as a singer, songwriter and mentor; beloved by many,” Francisco’s family said.
Born in the coastal town of Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935, Francisco was just a toddler when he migrated with his parents to Trinidad and Tobago in 1937.

Trinidad and Tobago is the birthplace of calypso music, and it’s where the name and persona of the Mighty Sparrow would emerge to produce a list of hit songs in the genre: Jean and Dinah, Both of Them, Congo Man, Mr. Walker, The Lizard and many more.
“Through his music, his wit and his unmatched contribution to culture, he carried the spirit and stories of our people across the world,” said Kamla Persad Bissessar, the country’s prime minister. “For decades, Sparrow has been part of the soundtrack of Trinidad and Tobago. His music made us laugh, made us think and made us proud of who we are.”
Wide-ranging songs
Trinidad and Tobago has honoured the composer and performer with national awards, and in 1987, the University of the West Indies conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters on Francisco.
“A titan has transitioned, a legend has left,” the consulate general for Trinidad and Tobago in Toronto said in a social media post. “Thank you for sharing your genius with us and leaving us with a legacy that will stand every test of time.”
The performer’s stature was reflected by the fact that leaders of Jamaica, Barbados and Dominica, among others, took time on Sunday to pay tribute.
“His songs became part of the soundtrack of Caribbean life and culture, beloved by generations of Jamaicans and people across the region,” said Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. “I extend my condolences to his family, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, and the people of Grenada, where he was born.”
Francisco recorded hundreds of songs in a career that spanned six decades. He performed in several countries around the world, including at famous venues such as New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
While the Mighty Sparrow carried on the party tradition of a genre popularized through the Caribbean’s carnival culture, other songs were topical and even political. They included Model Nation, celebrating Trinidad and Tobago’s independence in 1962, Martin Luther King For President, and Kennedy and Kruschev, referencing the American and Soviet leaders during the height of the Cold War.
The singer also celebrated Toronto’s burgeoning Caribana festival in 1972 with Toronto Mas.
He returned to the city many times, including in 2014 for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) screening of the documentary The Glamour Boyz Again: The Mighty Sparrow and Lord Superior on the Hilton Rooftop. He had survived a diabetic coma the previous year.
Writing in 2021 on five pieces of music that influenced him, Canadian conductor and CBC Centrestage host Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser included the calypso artist’s Jean and Dinah.
“In this song, Mighty Sparrow deals with, among other things, the economic impact of the closure of American military bases in Trinidad. But you might be too busy dancing to notice,” said Bartholomew-Poyser.
“I am grateful this music informed my childhood,” said the conductor, born to Trinidadian and Jamaican parents.
Throughout his career, Francisco’s goal was to advance the calypso art form, according to Trinidadian cultural historian and author Rudolph Ottley.
“The Mighty Sparrow was the supreme entertainer, a cultural revolutionary and one of the world’s greatest calypsonians,” Ottley told The Associated Press.
