Portugal’s tourism sector generated record revenues with a growth of 37.5% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

2023 is a record year for Portugal’s tourism sector, with revenues of 25 billion euros, that is 37.5% more than in 2019 and 18.5% more than in 2022, according to Portugal’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, Nuno Fazenda.

Portugal just registered “the best year ever in the history of tourism” in 2023, with hotels and Airbnb accommodation receiving close to 30 million guests and 77 million overnight stays, that is already 10% more than during pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Portugal’s Tourism sector is doing better than in traditional tourism destinations globally where the World Tourism Organization highlighted a 90% recovery compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Tourism in Portugal is registering an exponential growth and is expected to be doing even better in 2024.

Portugal’s main tourism markets are the UK, France and Germany that are the traditional source countries. However, the tourism market that has registered the highest growth in Portugal is the USA, since Americans are already the No 1 tourism market in Lisbon and the trend is expected to continue in 2024. Lisbon is now trending and is one the favorite European cities for American tourists.
