Seyitan Babatayo, the 25-year-old lady who accused Nigerian singer, Oladapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’Banj, of raping her has withdrawn her petition against the singer.
Babatayo had accused D’banj of forcing his way into her hotel room after a party and raping her in December 2018.
In a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Babatayo, through her lawyer, Olamide Omileye, withdrew the case citing “personal reasons”.
“We hereby officially notify you of our client’s intention to withdraw and discontinue her petition against Mr. Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo aka D’Banj for personal reasons.
“Our client further humbly applies that the investigation and all other action that is currently being carried out by the police with respect to the petition be stayed,” the letter dated July 17 partly reads.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin), Umar Sanda, in his response to the letter said the investigation was “discontinued as no substantial evidence to prove the allegation of rape against the suspect.”
The rape allegation was made after D’Banj joined the campaign against sexual abuse and personally condemned rape on his Instagram page in June.
D’Banj came under further scrutiny when Babatayo revealed that she was allegedly arrested by police on the musician’s order and coerced into deleting the social media posts with which she first revealed the allegation.
